Bypassing China’s firewall and using artificial intelligence to design new drugs

As protests against China’s strict Covid-19 measures swept social media last week, one Twitter account emerged as a key source of information: @李老师不是你老师 (“Teacher Li is not your teacher”).

People all over China sent protest videos and real-time updates via private messages, with the sender’s name anonymous.

The man behind the account, Li, is a Chinese artist living in Italy, who asked to be identified only by his last name due to security concerns. He has been uploading videos around the clock to help people in China get information and also to inform the world.

His work is taking a toll – he’s received death threats and the police have returned to his family in China. But it also brings a sense of liberation, says our China correspondent Zei Yang Li. Read the full story.

Biotech labs are using AI inspired by DALL-E to design new drugs

News: Artificial intelligence models like OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 — programs trained to draw pictures of pretty much anything you want — have been swept up by creative industries. Now, two biotech labs are using this type of artificial intelligence, known as diffusion modeling, to model new types of proteins that have never existed in nature.

Why is it important: Proteins are the basic building blocks of living systems. These protein generators can be directed to design proteins with unique properties such as shape, size, and function.
