  • Nokia’s Lightspan MF-14 is the world’s first 6G broadband platform that enables the integration of all services over a single fiber infrastructure.

  • Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller brings an industry-leading software-defined networking platform that enables network automation and intelligent insights to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.

December 2, 2022

Sydney, Australia – Nokia and NBN Co Today, Nokia announced its deployment nextgeneration broadband platform and his Altiplano To the access controller deliver smarter and faster and more green nbn® network. The is placement is First for Lighting MF-14 in Southern Hemisphere.

With unmatched capacity, space efficiency, low latency, smart, reliable and energy efficiency, MF-14 will help address Australia’s broadband needs in the future and help the company achieve its zero carbon goals.

Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller is a software-defined (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) tool used to drive greater automation and virtualization. It enables innovation in the way networks are managed using open APIs for network automation and programmability.

nbn welcomes the Australian Government’s recent commitment of an additional $2.4 billion to bring more fiber to communities across Australia. The new investment will enable an additional 1.5 million homes and businesses currently served by Fiber to the Node (FTTN) to upgrade to Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). nbn is developing a FTTP technology platform to enable higher speed services in combination with additional homes and businesses connected by fibre, and has recently completed a successful 25Gbps FTTP technology lab evaluation.

The full fiber connection will help deliver faster broadband speeds, reliability and energy efficiency, as well as support the additional data capacity of the nbn network. These upgrades will help eligible customers work more efficiently from home, run online businesses, participate in online education, receive telehealth consultations, stream entertainment, and connect with friends and family.

nbn will be the first operator in the Southern Hemisphere to introduce the MF-14 platform in October 2022, following the announcement by US and UK operators. Deployment will begin in 2023.

Steven Roux, CEO of nbn, said: “The rapid advancement of technology will play an important role in driving our country’s economic prosperity and transitioning to a smarter, digital technology-based economy. By leading the adoption of this next-generation technology, we can help meet our nation’s information needs now and into the future.

“We’re helping to unlock social and economic benefits for households, businesses and communities across Australia with our network investments that deepen fiber to communities and expand the reach and capacity of fixed wireless and satellite.

“More than 8.5 million homes and businesses are connected to services on the nbn network, meaning approximately 20 million people connect to our network every day.”

Ricky Corker, General Customer Experience Officer On Nokia, said: “Nokia and nbn have worked together for more than 10 years and we are delighted to continue to support nbn in its next technology evolution by introducing more advanced and energy efficient network technology. By leveraging Nokia’s advanced fiber technology combined with network optimization and automation capabilities, Nokia and nbn can meet customer demand for faster, smarter and greener broadband today and into the future.”

Lightspan MF-14, the world’s first 6th generation optical line terminal (OLT)

The industry is entering a “fiber to everything” era. Once operators install fiber optic cables in homes, that means their networks can pass through other buildings and homes on the street to connect businesses and other services. Fiber PON will be capable of supporting high-bandwidth consumer services, Industry 4.0 applications, business connectivity, 5G transport, and smart city services. This creates more revenue opportunities, lowers TCO, and significantly lowers overall energy consumption.

This new broadband era, defined by the World Broadband Association (WBBA) as Broadband 6, requires new technical solutions. Nokia’s flagship Lightspan MF-14 is the world’s first 6th generation optical line terminal (OLT).

Based on new and advanced hardware and classy software design, MF-14 is a leap forward in fiber connectivity solutions and is the only solution ready for mass delivery of 25G, 50G and 100G PON services.

  • 4 times the capacity of the previous generation, ensuring a smooth transition to massive connections with 25, 50 and 100.

  • Guarantees the highest availability (six nine) on the market. This is important because consumers and businesses depend on uninterrupted broadband

  • Millisecond latency for new arrays of 5G transport and industry 4.0 applications

  • With 20% more energy efficiency than the industry average, operators can connect more nodes to the fiber network and reduce overall energy consumption to meet sustainability goals.

  • A modular software architecture allows for less effort and time, and greater flexibility to upgrade software and install new features.

  • SDN programmability and open APIs to enable monitoring functions with Nokia or third-party network monitoring functions

  • Fast telemetry and digital mirroring in the cloud to improve networking
