Ben White: England defender skips World Cup training camp to return home for ‘personal reasons’ | Football news

Ben White has left England’s World Cup training camp in Qatar to return home for “personal reasons”.

The Arsenal defender is unlikely to return to the team for the remainder of the tournament.

The 25-year-old has made an impressive start to the season with the Gunners in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man World Cup squad.

White has missed England’s opening two Group B matches and missed Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Wales through illness.

“We want to respect the player’s privacy at this time,” the FA said in a statement.

Substitutions cannot be made at this stage of the World Cup, and Arsenal shared the FA’s statement on social media with the caption: “We’re all with you, Ben” along with a love emoji.

White made his second major international appearance with England as part of last summer’s European Championship finalist squad.

The defender did not start during the tournament and has won just two games since then, making it four in total.

Southgate’s first choice remained White until the news.

James Maddison has been a doubt since going off the field in Leicester’s final, but came off the bench against Wales and overcame a knee complaint that ruled him out of the first two games.

Kyle Walker made his first start since groin surgery in October as England beat Wales on Tuesday, with Calvin Phillips leading the minutes as he completed his fitness routine following shoulder surgery.

England begin their round of 16 campaign against Senegal on Sunday after topping Group B.
