The Pac-12 has officially been eliminated from the College Football Playoff for the sixth straight season, while the Big Ten is expected to become only the second conference in tournament history to place two teams in a four-team field. It all comes as No. 5 Ohio State’s national championship hopes are renewed Friday night. No. 4 USC was destroyed by No. 11 Utah 47-24 2022 Pac-12 Championship.

If the Buckeyes were selected by the CFP selection committee, they would likely finish fourth and make the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons. Ohio State beat Clemson 49-28 in the semifinals two years ago before falling to Alabama in the 2021 CFP National Championship. Both teams are coming off losses this week and OSU is one loss short of the season, making it unlikely that the No. 6 Crimson Tide will leapfrog the Buckeyes for the final spot this year.

With Utah defending its Pac-12 title and beating the Trojans for the second time this season, Utah will clinch a Pac-12 berth in the Rose Bowl, where Utah is expected to play No. 8 Penn State. Although the Nittany Lions might have chosen the Rose Bowl anywaythey are now the highest-ranked Big Ten team not playing in the CFP and have no worries in this game.

Ohio State’s advance to the CFP opens up a spot in the Orange Bowl for No. 9 Clemson (against No. 23 North Carolina on Saturday), which was previously scheduled to play the ACC champion. His spot is occupied by Tennessee, the highest-ranked remaining team in the SEC, Big Ten or Notre Dame.

The Volunteers were scheduled to play AAC champion No. 18 Tulane (against No. 22 UCF on Saturday) in the Cotton Bowl. Replacing the Vols are the Trojans, who will take on No. 12 Washington and No. 13 Florida State on New Year’s 6.
