Sports Review: Doherty, Santos Lift Mariners past Thunder


HOCKEY

Tim Doherty had two goals and Maine Mariners’ Matthew Santos had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 win over the ECHL’s Adirondack Thunder in Glens Falls, New York.

Doherty scored less than five minutes into the game to give Maine a 1-0 lead after one period. Doherty struck again with 2:03 left to make it 3-0 Santos at 16:47.

Midway through the third, Nick Rivera struck out Francois Brassard. Brassard finished with 21 saves.

In the third quarter, the teams took a total of 84 penalty minutes, including five fouls

BASKETBALL

NBA G LEAGUE: J.T. Thor made four free throws in the final 11 seconds of the game.

Jalen Crutcher scored 31 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead six Greensboro players in double figures. Kobe Simmons had 28 points, Aston Hagans had 13 points and 10 assists.

Luka Samanich led the Celtics with 31 points, while Marvin Smith had 22 points and Danzel Valentine had a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

GOLF

HERO WORLD CHALLENGE: Victor Hovland shot a 70 to take the lead by one shot, while Scotty Scheffler took a step back to world No. 1 with a 68 at the Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas.

Hovland is -5 for the tournament and has a one-stroke lead over Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele.

Scores are often much lower at Tiger Woods Bahamas’ elite 20-man field event. On Thursday, the course was wet and played for a long time. Friday with 30 mph winds.

FOOTBALL

NWSL: Portland Thorns coach Ryan Wilkinson has resigned just five weeks after leading the team to the National Women’s Soccer League championship.

Wilkinson released a statement saying the players had asked him to resign and he had complied. Wilkinson said she was investigated by the NWSL and the players’ union and cleared of wrongdoing after she self-reported that she and the players had feelings for each other but never approached her. He said he and the player eventually “ceased all communication outside of work.”

BOBSLED

World Cup: Olympic champion Kylie Humphreys of the United States was the fastest in two runs on her way to winning the monobob world championships in Park City, Utah.

It was Humphreys’ second medal in as many monobob races this season, leading the world championships. Germany’s Lisa Buckwitz was second and Canada’s Cynthia Appiah was third.

SKI

World Cup: Sofia Goggia of Italy held off Olympic champion Corinne Suter of Switzerland to win the first women’s race of the season at the World Championships in Lake Louise, Alberta.

Goggia, the ninth runner on the course, finished in 1 minute, 47.81 seconds, 0.04 seconds behind Suter. Austria’s Cornelia Hütter finished third on the world championship podium for the 18th time.

Goggia is seeking his third World Cup appearance this season. That would make her the first woman to win three world titles since Lindsey Vonn won six straight between 2007-08 and 2012-13.
