Steve Young believes the 49ers’ defense can make up for the inconsistency of the offense

The 49ers’ defense has been the star of the team’s four-game winning streak, as San Francisco’s defense has not allowed a single touchdown. score in the second half during this stretch.

While relying on defense to win a Super Bowl isn’t unheard of, 49ers legend Steve Young believes it’s not ideal to rely on defense to carry a team.

However, the former linebacker says the team’s solid defense can make up for some of the offensive inconsistencies as an additional part of a deep run in the NFL playoffs.

“When you’re not at the top of your game, there’s always zero on the other side,” Young said. KNBR 680 “Tolbert and Copes” on Thursday. “So if we can get through this defense all year, it’s going to make up for a lot of hills, which is great.

“If we can stay healthy and be one or two of the best defenses in the league, you know we’ll be there. It’s just a matter of truth.”

The 49ers can make the playoffs with their defense, but Young believes the offense will need to play in critical moments if San Francisco wants to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of the 2022 NFL season.

Young added that teams that relied on their defense to win a Super Bowl like the Denver Broncos did in 2016 won’t be around anytime soon.

“So the defense, the turnovers, ‘Hey, you’re going to the Super Bowl.’ “What have you got?” said the Young. “I’ve become viciously defensive. I don’t think I’ll ever do it again. I think it’s overextended.
