Blood glucose levels in the body represent the amount of glucose in the blood, a type of sugar that is the body’s main source of energy.
We consume glucose through food, and it is distributed throughout the body’s cells.
High blood sugar (hyperglycemia), or technically high blood sugar, occurs when the body can’t use glucose properly (type 2 diabetes) or in insufficient amounts (type 1 diabetes).
If this condition continues for a long time, for example, months or years, it can permanently damage some parts of the body, such as kidneys, blood vessels, nerves, and eyes.
In diabetes, high blood sugar levels can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Overtreatment of hypoglycemic episodes (low blood sugar)
Missing or taking the wrong dose of diabetes medication
lack of movement
A cold-like illness
Binge eating, such as snacking between meals
Certain medications, such as steroids
In addition, children and young adults may experience episodes of hyperglycemia during growth spurts.
Symptoms of high blood sugar
High blood sugar does not mean you have diabetes, as high blood sugar is a symptom of diabetes.
In some cases, people with hyperglycemia have no symptoms.
However, these are the most common symptoms of high blood sugar:
Frequent urination and/or urination at night
slow healing of wounds and cuts
Constant fatigue or extreme fatigue
dry and itchy skin
Belly fat gain / weight gain
Lower blood sugar with foods that contain high blood sugar
The glycemic index, or simply glycemic index, refers to the number of carbohydrates in a food that raise blood sugar and can range from 0 to 100.
High-GI ingredients are processed faster than low-GI foods, so consuming the latter will lower insulin levels. In addition, these foods are helpful in losing excess weight.
