Rita Ora has confirmed that she is not ‘Becky with Good Hair’, putting an end to six years of speculation.
The 32-year-old pop star was rumored to be the mystery woman in Beyoncé’s 2016 song “Sorry” about the man her husband Jay-Z cheated on her with. Rita then sparked gossip by posting a secret photo of herself in a lemon-embellished bra and J necklace as the cover of Beyoncé’s Lemonade album.
However, Rita insisted it was “pure coincidence” in an interview with Louis Theroux, the director of the new BBC series The Louis Theroux Interviews.
The documentary maker asked her, “When Beyoncé released her album, a mysterious woman called Jay-Z for cheating on her. Then sometime in 2016, you posted a photo of yourself with ‘Lemonade.’ Put a lemon on your bra and a ‘J’ on your neck.”
Rita replied: “Oh my god, it was literally a fluke. I didn’t even think about it, I swear. And it wasn’t a J, it was an R. They turned it around. [the picture] round and then looked like a J.”
The singer said the bra was a collaboration with her underwear brand Tezenis and had nothing to do with gossip about other musicians.
He continued: “No, there was nothing [to do with it]. No, it was my design for Tezenis, an underwear company I worked with. That’s what I mean, man – a pinch of salt – you gotta take things with a pinch of salt. It’s crazy.”
Rita then laughed about the “ridiculous” gift she received from her “good friend” Katy Perry, presenting her with a sign that read “Not Becky.”
Beyoncé’s song “Sorry,” from her Lemonade album, sparked speculation that husband Jay-Z had cheated on her with someone she calls Becky, as she sang, “You only want me when I’m gone.” Call Becky with the beautiful hair.”
Like Rita, another woman rumored to be Becky is fashion designer Rachel Roy, wife of Jay-Z’s business partner Damon Dash, who tweeted that she had “good hair.”
She later faced online abuse and posted a follow-up message as if she was responding to the trolls. It read: “I respect love, family, family and strength. Bullying of any kind is something that no one will tolerate, no matter what.”
